The principles of influence
The uniqueness of hippotherapy lies in the harmonious combination of body-oriented and cognitive methods of influencing the patient's psyche. Therapeutic horse riding in General has a biomechanical effect on the human body, strengthening it. For example, it transmits motor impulses to the rider, similar to the movements of a person when walking. Movements of the horse's back muscles, consisting of many elements, have a massaging and soft warming (the horse's temperature is 1.5 degrees higher than that of a human) effect on the rider's leg muscles and pelvic organs, which increases blood flow in the extremities. At the horse's step — the main gait used in hippotherapy — the horse makes about 110 multidirectional oscillatory movements, which in turn are transmitted to the rider. In order to maintain the correct landing during riding, the rider must maintain balance, coordinate and synchronize their movements. Thus, in a patient with cerebral palsy, the muscles that are inactive in normal life are included in the work. In addition, horse riding stimulates the development of fine motor skills, perseverance and improves the harmonious perception of the surrounding world in patients, including those with mental disorders of various severities. It is important that during the rehabilitation process, the acquired physical, communication and other skills are consistently transferred from the riding situation to everyday life.

The principles of influence
Hippotherapy is used for the rehabilitation of patients with neurological and other disorders, such as autism, cerebral palsy, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injuries, behavioral and mental disorders. The effectiveness of hippotherapy for many indications is not completely clear, so further research is recommended. As for the effectiveness of hippotherapy in the treatment of autism, there is still insufficient evidence. The method is also used in cases of hearing and vision damage.
The results of the research in the field of hippotherapy
The result of the study of the effect of hippotherapy programs on static balance and strength in adolescents with intellectual disabilities was both a significant improvement in strength parameters, and a significant improvement in more complex exercises to maintain balance (for example, standing on one leg). Based on the results obtained, the following conclusion was made: hippotherapy can be used as an effective tool for improving balance and strength in people with intellectual disabilities.
Results from another study show that hippotherapy can also improve balance and gait in people with multiple sclerosis who are undergoing outpatient treatment.
One of the few studies so far has examined how therapeutic horse riding rehabilitation affects the overall severity of autism symptoms in children with autism spectrum disorders. The study used the child autism definition scale (CARS) and the Timber-lawn parent-child interaction scale. In the primary phase of horse therapy, the CARS scale showed no changes. However, after 3 and 6 months of training, there was a decrease in the symptoms of autism. The Timber-lawn scale showed significant improvements in mood and tone after 3 and 6 months of riding, as well as minor improvements in reducing negative symptoms after a 6-month rehabilitation program. Measuring the quality of life of parents also showed improvements.
