Мечеть Джами

Мечеть Джами Jami Mosque The Jami Mosque and the minaret, both buildings from the early 19th century, form a single complex with a well-landscaped courtyard. Local legends connect the construction of the mosque with Umarkhan, who ruled Kokand in 1809-1822. The building served the townspeople for Friday prayers.

The symmetrical plan of the mosque, developed along the transverse axis, consists of a winter room and a spacious three-sided ivan, the flat cross of which is supported by 98 wooden columns.

The main façade of the building, representing a slender colonnade with a stepped, decoratively decorated cornice, faces east. The mosque amazes with its huge size (97.5 X 25.5 m) and variety of decor.

In contrast to the ascetic facades, where the burnt brickwork is left unfinished, the main facade and interiors contain rich decoration. The ceiling lamps and beams are covered with various floral and geometric patterns. The intersection lines of the walls and ceilings are softened by a stalactite frieze. The walls are finished with ganch and then divided into rectangular panels with pointed recesses. At the bottom of the walls, the panel is decorated with ornaments using the chaspak technique. This type of decor follows purely folk traditions and is a ganch mosaic. It is simple in technique and very effective.

Individual designs are cut into the alabaster layer and filled with mortar of a different tone while maintaining a smooth wall surface. This technique was widely used not only in interior decoration in the architecture of Fergana, but also in other regions of Central Asia.Мечеть Джами

The shaped columns of the mosque have stalactite tops and marble bases, harmoniously combined with the floor lining made of the same material.

A minaret rises nearby, apparently built at the same time as the mosque. It is shaped like a truncated cone with a hexagonal dome lantern at the top. There is a spiral staircase inside the trunk.  The austere monumental volume of the minaret, more than 22 m high, is completely devoid of decoration.

The Jami complex, being a typical religious building of Fergana architecture with valuable monumental and decorative elements, is under state protection.
