Хонако Корихона

Honako Korihona

To the south of the Khoja Ilgor mosque there is a more ancient architectural monument - Khonako Korikhona, where wandering dervishes gathered, reading the Koran and organizing their zeal. According to old-timers of Rishtan, this building is about 300 years old.

A rectangular courtyard (20X24 m), lined with fruit trees, is built up on two sides by huj rami, at their junction a square domed room (9.3 X 9.3 m) was erected, which served for public meals — a hearth is arranged here and the walls are covered with a thick layer of soot. The entrance to the refectory is marked by a portal oriented to the north. Scant light enters through a small hole left in the roof of the dome, which obviously served as a chimney. Each hujra, opened into the courtyard by a semicircular doorway and window, represents a square room (3X3 m), heated by a fireplace. In the southern part of the courtyard there is the burial of a local ishan, highlighted by a pointed tombstone, and a cave at a depth of two meters, used on Muslim holidays for forty-day fasts (chillakhana).

A kind of overlapping structure. Semicircular arched funnel-shaped vaults turning into a hemispherical dome are displayed in the corners of the Khujr. The corners of the refectory are filled with vaults laid out along triangular wooden arches. The same primitive arch is mounted above the entrance to the portal. The high raw dome of the honako hall is unusual, having an unconventional pointed end, and an oval shape.

In Central Asian architecture, the appearance of portal-domed brick buildings was preceded by preliminary experiments in a simpler raw material. This is confirmed by familiarity with a number of raw structures registered in 1939 during archaeological work on the Great Ferghana Canal: three of them — the mausoleums of Baytak and the nameless ones — were erected at the Namuna cemetery on the Kuva—Ferghana road, and the fourth, known as mazar Lyangarbobo, in the village of Chadak. In the Rishtan honako we have another example of a raw portal-dome volume.

Honako Korihona is the only preserved architectural monument in the Ferghana Valley of this purpose. Its architectural forms, the used building material and constructive techniques do not contradict the date of construction named by local old—timers - the turn of the XVIII century.
